Hello! We had another great meeting last night, thanks to the many who attended, with special thanks to our guests Professor Atiba Ellis, Annabelle Harless, Helen Harris, and Angela Lang. Our topic? “Race & Redistricting: Wisconsin’s Maps and the Voting Rights Act.”

As I said last night, by standing together across race and class we inoculate ourselves against those who would divide us. We stand together no matter our race, gender or zip code, no matter whether our backyards have corn or condos, forests or freeways, and no matter how we pray or what language we speak.
We stand together because as a state, a nation, and a people, we sink or swim together. This week’s three action items, please do them now.
1. National: Democracy in America is under siege and the federal Freedom to Vote and John Lewis Voting Rights Acts are stalled in Washington. They MUST pass.
2. Local: We are hosting a Gerrymandering 101! This is a chance for you to brush up on the topic, and/or bring friends and family into the fold. Gerrymandering 101 is an engaging program that defines “redistricting” and “gerrymandering” in a way easy to understand; describes how gerrymandering has adversely affected Wisconsin’s ability to deal with issues that face it; highlights work ordinary citizens from all over the state and the political spectrum are doing to end gerrymandering; and provides answers to questions participants might have. The program features Carlene Bechen, statewide organizer, Fair Maps Coalition, and Matt Rothschild, executive director, Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.
