We’re off soon to the Shorewood Farmers Market, to talk to voters about Wisconsin’s maps. We’re bringing yard signs, give aways and more, including a nifty flyer. Our message:
No matter our color, background, or zip code, Wisconsinites want pretty similar things. We value our freedom, the freedom that comes from having a say in decisions affecting our lives. We value fair play, and show our strength by how we treat each other. We value each other and the communities we call home.
In 2011, a small group of politicians pulled off a secret power grab that rigged our voting district maps. They tried to divide us, and made us question each other. They drew voting districts that made some votes more powerful than others. They drew lines that carved up our neighborhoods. They chose which voices to hear and which to ignore.
Today, no matter our politics, we have little say in whether our air and water are clean, who gets healthcare, how our schools are funded, and so much more. That’s because the maps they drew guaranteed them power for a decade, no matter what.
But that was then and this is now. New legislative maps are coming. Citizens from across the state and the political divide are standing up and speaking out. What we do right now will shape our lives and our communities for the next decade.
Join us as we stand together and demand fair voting districts. Districts where every vote gets counted, and every vote counts equally.
